Yoga and Reiki
“Nothing is more revealing than movement.” –Martha Graham
Have you ever gone into a deep stretch and cried (or almost) from the simultaneous feeling of sheer discomfort and powerful release? It’s amazing what our body continues to remember and hold deep within the tissues of our being that the mind may have forgotten. What we experience in our lives, our muscles remember. Think about riding a bike, handwriting, typing on a keyboard are all things that are possible because of muscle memory. The physical body remembers the experience of the mind and vice versa so that the body does not have to relearn our daily experiences.
The same concept also applies to emotional trauma affecting our nervous system. The body remembers as a protective reaction for future threats. The problem occurs when this function no longer serves us and we are left with reactions of jumping when touched in a certain area, tightness in our muscles from hyper-vigilance, exhaustion caused by over functioning of the sympathetic system—fight or flight response, persistent anxiety.
What’s more, if we are experiencing something in our environment—feelings and emotions—and we choose not to interact with them or speak what we are experiencing, we end up storing these in our body, causing discomfort, tightness, and other physical symptoms.
The practice of yoga utilizes movement to allow for bringing into awareness, shifting, and/or removing that which does not serve us in order to make space for growth and vitality. The addition or stand alone application of yoga work can provide you with a unique experiential healing and understanding that may not be present in traditional talk therapy.
